Johannesburg, South Africa: South African law enforcement authorities launched nationwide search operations on Sunday following two separate mass shootings near Johannesburg and Cape Town that left a total of 27 people dead and at least 26 others injured.
The first attack occurred late Saturday evening in the township of Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), eight unidentified assailants armed with AK-47 assault rifles and handguns stormed a local tavern. The gunmen opened fire on patrons gathered outside before moving indoors to continue shooting. Seventeen people—13 men and four women—were killed, while 15 others sustained severe gunshot wounds. Before fleeing in two vehicles, the perpetrators robbed several victims of personal belongings and set fire to two parked automobiles.
Hours later, at approximately 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, a second mass shooting erupted at an entertainment venue in Lwandle, a township near Cape Town. Armed suspects opened fire on patrons inside the establishment, killing 10 people and wounding 11 others. Five victims died at the scene, while five others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to nearby medical facilities.
SAPS specialized detective units and tactical response teams have been deployed to both regions to track down the shooters. Police confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with either incident and that motives remain undetermined.
The dual massacres come just days after a separate attack in KwaZulu-Natal killed 11 people at a house party, marking one of the deadliest weeks of gun violence in recent South African history. Civic organizations and regional leaders have renewed calls for military deployments in violence hotspots and stricter enforcement against illegal arms proliferation to curb the country's soaring homicide rate.
